# [up-instant]

Activates this link-like element on `mousedown` instead of `click` ("Act on press").

For links with [`[up-follow]`](https://unpoly.com/api/up-follow.md), this will save time that would otherwise be spent waiting for the user to release the mouse button. Since the request starts right away, the interaction will appear faster.

For [faux-interactive elements](https://unpoly.com/learn/faux-interactive-elements.md), setting `[up-instant]` will cause the [`up:click`](https://unpoly.com/api/up:click.md) event to be emitted on `mousedown` instead of `click`. A press on a control within the element, or a press whose `mousedown` was prevented, still emits [`up:click`](https://unpoly.com/api/up:click.md) on `click`.

To apply the instant effect without changing your HTML, configure [`up.link.config.instantSelectors`](https://unpoly.com/api/up.link.config.md#config.instantSelectors).

## Accessibility {#accessibility}

Links or [faux-interactive elements](https://unpoly.com/learn/faux-interactive-elements.md) with `[up-instant]` can still be activated with the keyboard.

With `[up-instant]`, users can no longer cancel a click by dragging the pressed mouse away from the element. However, for navigation actions this isn't required. E.g., many operating systems switch tabs on `mousedown` instead of `click`.
